JOB SUMMARY:

The physician assistant in concert with the supervising physician will provide treatment of acute and chronic orthopedic problems as well as preventive care.  The physician assistant shall be considered the agent of the supervising physician in the performance of all practice-related activities including the ordering of diagnostic, therapeutic and other medical services.  The physician assistant shall augment the physicians’ data gathering abilities and assist the supervising physician in reaching decisions and instituting care plans for the patients.  The physician assistant will initiate treatment or be sure that the treatment plan is being carried out, assess the progress of that treatment and alter the plan as necessary.  The physician assistant may order, prescribe, dispense and administer drugs, medical devices, diagnostic or therapeutic medial regimens as designated by his/her supervising physician.  The physician assistant will provide care in the office setting as well as in the hospital and will assist in rounding as well as surgical care.

  • All staff is required to follow, uphold and enforce all UBO policies as outlined in the corporate policy manual, compliance manual, HIPAA manual, and OSHA manual.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform comprehensive and problem focused history and physical exams, interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
  • Interpret and correlate subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis.
  • Formulate a treatment plan (further testing, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapy, watchful observation, referral and follow-up) for orthopedic problems within the scope of practice.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions for specific conditions when appropriate and appropriately refer patients when evaluation or consultation by other health care professionals is required.
  • Order, collect and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures and studies including blood and tissue specimens.
  • Order or perform diagnostic studies such as  EMG, EKG, compartment pressure measurements and x-rays examinations including CT, MRI and bone scans.
  • Perform procedures such as digital blocks, regional anesthesia and minor outpatient procedures, wound closure, wound management, wound debridement, incision and drainage, application of casts and splints and removal of percutaneous pins.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa as well as brace, cast and splint applications.  
  • Assist in surgery to include first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon.
  • Conduct hospital rounds, write orders and perform consultations.
  • Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries and history and physicals.
  • Order, prescribe, dispense and administer medication (Schedule II, III, IV, V) orthosis, orthotics, braces and other orthopedic devices as allowed by state legislation.
  • In a hospital or office setting order and /or administer controlled substances, whole blood and blood components as allowed by state legislation and written agreement and with an active DEA number
  • Authenticate via signature any form that may otherwise be authenticated by a physician’s signature as permitted by the supervising physician, state or federal law and facility protocol.  
  • Evaluate screen and council patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources.  Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, manage databases and perform quality assurance.  
  • Document medical records in an electronic medical record.
  • Complete additional paperwork/electronic transmission as needed by the patient
  • Other duties as assigned

Primary supervision will be performed in the office, hospital and satellite settings with personal contact as outlined in the regulations. When the primary supervising physician is unavailable, alternate supervision will be performed by the substitute supervising physician who will meet all requirements as outlined in the regulations. Immediate access via telecommunications is always available.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have thorough knowledge of techniques required for diagnosing, treating and prescribing medicines and alternatives for the patients recovery
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Must know how to maintain safety in the work place
  • Must be able to handle emergency situations efficiently
  • Must be able to work as part of a team

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program with a Masters Degree
  • Experience in orthopedics is preferred but not required
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS:
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants(NCCPA)
  • Recertification from the NCCPA every 6 years
  • 100 hours of CME every 2 years
  • BLS certification
ENVIRONMENTAL/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: 


Weight Lifting Requirements:  If heavy lifting is required, no staff member should bear any more weight than they are comfortable bearing.  They should seek assistance with heavy patients, exam tables or boxes.  Use OSHA recommendations for back safety.  

Environmental Conditions:  Office environment with no extreme noise or working conditions.
